Flying High Themed Plates, Ceramics
Unit: Ceramics
Learning Goal: Produce a work of art through clay that utilizes complex forms and glazing techniques.
3rd Grade Art Vocabulary:
The vocabulary words used in today’s lesson underlined on poster in class: Add low relief.
Depth, symmetry, two-dimensional, positive space, negative space, intermediate colors, low relief, glaze, printing plate, multiple images, brayer, apps (digital visual art application), copyright laws.
Low relief definition:Relief, ( from Italian relievare: “to raise”) also called relievo, in sculpture, any work in which the figures project from a supporting background, usually a plane surface. Reliefs are classified according to the height of the figures’ projection or detachment from the background. In a low relief, or bas-relief (basso-relievo), the design projects only slightly from the ground and there is little or no undercutting of outline

Step 1: Knead the air bubbles out of the clay

Step 2: Flatten the clay by pressing before using the rolling pin

Step 3: press the clay slab into the plate armature (on a paper so it doesn’t stick) then lift off to have a plate mold.

Step 4: sculpt and carve into the clay plate, adding the extra clay you carved off around the plate shape to make a low relief picture with the flying high theme we used in art with wings and surrealism.

Step 5: Sign the bottom & put class code.

We will use glazes and glaze after fired at cone 4 for a dinnerware safe plate.

Another youtube example of a low relief fish made of clay above for another idea.

Differentiation / Accommodations
*Accommodations made with private, one to three tutoring at each table as I walk around to offer help with their drawings, fonts and answers.
*Building on previous lessons.
*Encouraging a personal theme and meaning in art expression.
*Assessing the student level together with the 1-4 Level Art Evaluation poster & assessment charts on each table.
*Allowing the students to show me what they can do in art so I may help each child perform to the highest level , individualized.
*Basic Classroom rules & CHAMPS gone over as well as line up and Jobs/Helpers. Looking for the child acting out to give a job to in order to offer praise for something done well.
2 AVID Scholars recognized each class (different scholars each week).
End with an Art Gallery walk around the tables to view scholar art and do an assessment on levels together to teach self-assessment, the highest level is to get them to assess their work and know what constitutes the highest level of excellent artwork showing strong evidence of critical thinking and inventiveness.
Reflection/Closure:
Discuss Homework:
Share with your partner what you added to your plate with low relief to make it personal.
Choose a scholar to hold up his or her example, pointing to the low relief design (showing they attained knowledge by using the art vocabulary).
*Continue to take photos and research for your own ideas in art. If you start to sketch out your ideas bring them in and we can add them into your art portfolio (sketchbook).
Materials:
Pencils, paper, crayons, internet video of Mrs. Smith teaching Flying High Themed Plates, Ceramics. Small plates to use as molds, clay, fist size each, any other tools the school has for carving, rolling pins.
