Learning Goal: Produce a work of art through clay that utilizes additive/subtractive techniques.





Art Vocabulary: additive & subtractive shown visually with pinching techniques.


Additive is adding on and subtractive is taking away.

Play video and model how to :
Step 1- roll a ball
Step 2- Press your thumbs into the center
Step 3- Pinch a pot
Step 4- Add (Art term additive) a head of an animal you like.
Step 5- Take away, subtractive art vocabulary. Pinch to take away a part of the clay as you mold your body and details. Don’t forget to sign the bottom!
Walk around to offer individualized help as you replay the how to video.



  • Organize students into pairs or groups of three working and telling each other about their pinch pot animal as they work level 1-2 .Provide supportive and corrective feedback. Have advanced scholars be a helper to model to those having trouble.

  • Add details by pressing with fingers and tools provided like the example above. Talk about the different colors you will use to paint it when fired.


Check for understanding (Prove)
  • Use the Art Rubric at each table and posted for evaluating yourself . Hold up Level 4 Art from a scholar in the class or the teacher example.
  • Use praise to support behavior and learning.

Ongoing-Look for active listening steps as we follow directions at all times
  1. Look - at instructions with art materials to get to use them.
  2. Respond- thumbs up.
  3. Act- start art work.
  4. Check- teacher check as well as self checks continual.
  5. *Allowing the students to show me what they can do in art so I may help each child perform to the highest level , individualized.
  6. *Basic Classroom rules & CHAMPS gone over as well as line up and Jobs/Helpers. Looking for the child acting out to give a job to in order to offer praise for something done well.
    2 AVID scholars awarded each lesson with stickers.
    End each class by cleaning up tables , pushing in chair and standing by tables. Dismissed onto the spotted tape line by tables as teacher arrive for pick up.
  7. Materials:
    Clay- a fistful each
    Any clay tools- paper clips work great and old pencils for carving details
    Paper
    Small cups of water or paper towel with water
    Art centers
    The art lesson video/ internet
